Confessions of a Business Coach

Here is a confession you might not expect from a business coach.

Most of the work I do has very little to do with business tactics.

That may sound surprising, but it is true.

People often come to coaching thinking they need a better plan, better systems, or better answers. Sometimes those things matter. More often, what they really need is space to think clearly, someone to challenge their assumptions and help staying steady when things get hard.

That is the work beneath the work.

Coaching Is Not About Having All the Answers

Another confession. I do not sit in coaching sessions telling people exactly what to do.

Coaching is not advice giving. It is asking better questions, listening closely, and helping someone uncover what they already know but may not fully trust yet.

Most of the people I work with are capable, thoughtful, and motivated. They are not stuck because they lack intelligence or drive. They are stuck because leadership and ownership carry weight, and decision fatigue is real.

Coaching creates clarity. Clarity creates confidence.

What NCAA Wrestling Taught Me About Coaching

I have always been drawn to NCAA wrestling, not because it looks easy, but because it is not.

Wrestling is about mental stamina. There is nowhere to hide. No teammates to tag in. No shortcuts. It is you, your preparation, and your ability to stay composed when you are tired, uncomfortable and under pressure.

That is not unlike business ownership or leadership.

The people who grow are not always the most talented. They are often the ones who can stay disciplined, focused, and steady when things get hard. Coaching works the same way. Progress comes from showing up consistently, doing the small things well and not quitting when growth feels uncomfortable.

Progress Is Usually Quieter Than People Expect

Here is another confession. Coaching rarely produces dramatic overnight change.

What it does produce is steady progress.

Clients often tell me that things feel clearer. Decisions feel less heavy. They are more confident saying no. They are better at focusing on what actually matters. Those shifts may not look flashy from the outside, but over time, they change everything.

That kind of growth lasts.

Coaching Is a Long Game

Just like wrestling, coaching is about endurance. It is about building strong fundamentals and trusting the process. Some seasons move quickly. Others require patience.

The people who benefit most from coaching are not looking for quick fixes. They are willing to do the work, reflect honestly, and keep moving forward even when the path is not perfectly clear.

That kind of mindset shows up in business, leadership, and life.

Why I Do This Work

The final confession is simple. I genuinely enjoy this work.

I enjoy walking alongside people as they grow. I enjoy the quiet moments of clarity, the tough conversations, and the steady progress that comes from doing things intentionally.

Coaching is not about the hype. It is about helping people build something meaningful and sustainable, one decision at a time.

That is the work of The Owner’s Playbook. And it is work I am grateful to do.
